Updated: Nov 21

Not only is Black History Month is a time to reflect on the remarkable contributions of Black individuals throughout history, it's also about recognising the importance of empowering the next generation to become the trailblazers who will shape the future.

This Black History Month, our founder, Sharyh, joined the alumni panel at Surrey University’s Black Scholars event on October 24th, sharing plenty of engaging insights to enrich the next generation. Read on to learn more about the event's highlights.

Networking event highlights

The recent Surrey Black Scholars: Network, Empower & Connect event was a dynamic gathering designed to foster collaboration and exchange among Black scholars, students, and alumni. Panellists shared insights into their career journeys, strategies for overcoming systemic challenges, and reflections on the importance of representation in professional spaces. Attendees engaged in thought-provoking discussions on themes of identity, mentorship, and the value of a supportive network.

Discussion highlights: the road from scholars to professionals

The alumni panel provided a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from former students who have made an impact in their respective fields. It featured graduates from Surrey University (class years 2013-2022) across a variety of disciplines, including engineering, business, and English literature. Each panelist shared insights from their career journeys, offering valuable experiences and advice to current postgraduate and PhD students.

"Don't be afraid to develop your skills and learn the unique ways you add value." - Sharyh Murray, Alpha Artistry Founder

Key themes discussed were:

  • Practical tips for entering the workforce and improving your chances of success

  • The importance of networking and mentorship

  • The role of skills development

  • Insights alumni wished they had as students

  • And more.

Overall, the event was highly engaging, featuring an interactive Q&A with both online and in-person participants. We are excited to see how Surrey University will continue to support the next generation of scholars on their journeys through academia and beyond.

The Surrey Black Scholars project is deeply committed to creating spaces where Black voices are celebrated, nurtured, and amplified. Events like this networking evening go beyond professional development—they foster inclusivity, connection, and a sense of community. Hearing from the panellists about their remarkable journeys since leaving Surrey was truly inspiring. The highlight of the evening was the networking session, where attendees came together to talk, laugh, and share stories, reinforcing the importance of community, representation, and visibility. Feedback from students emphasised their desire for more events like this and for opportunities to stay connected with the alumni panellists. We extend our best wishes to all the panellists and alumni who participated and look forward to collaborating with them again in the future. - Eden Anin-Adjei, Surrey Black Scholars Race Equity Research Fellow)

About the Surrey Black Scholars Project

The Surrey Black Scholars Project The Surrey Black Scholars Project is dedicated to increasing the representation and success of underrepresented groups in postgraduate research (PGR). The project focuses on creating an equitable and inclusive experience for Black PGR students by implementing targeted interventions that address disparities in educational outcomes while celebrating cultural identity and heritage. Through mentorship, networking, and skill-building opportunities, it seeks to create a sustainable framework for inclusivity and equity in higher education. The project addresses the broken pipeline in postgraduate research by working to significantly increase the number of UK-domiciled Black students entering PGR studies. This is achieved through a comprehensive outreach programme targeting Black undergraduates and by offering tailored academic and peer mentoring support to ensure their success and retention.
